Privacy + Design
For the past decade, I’ve developed a specific interest in privacy as in important consideration in the practice of experience design.
Users, or, more importantly, people have become more and more concerned about the privacy and security of their personal information online. Though my interest can be traced back earlier, I began researching the topic of privacy by design about a decade ago as I became increasingly involved in the global internet freedom community. In 2018 I earned a Certificate in Privacy & Data Security at Georgetown University.
I’ve written and presented regularly on the topic, addressing audiences at the Brooklyn Product Design Meetup, Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE), Publicis Sapient, and the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. I debuted a poster on the topic at the Information Architecture Conference (IAC) in Seattle in 2024. My original article of this topic was published on UX Collective: Designing for Privacy in an Increasingly Public World. That piece evolved into a presentation, and now, I’m happy to announce, a book, which should be available from Rosenfeld Media by the Fall of 2025.
I have collaborated with companies on improving the privacy of their digital experiences and would be happy to collaborate with yours or to present on the topic to your group or organization.
“Privacy is not about secrecy. It’s all about control.”
